Primary research from books and online videos-
The primary research I've learned so much about different types of music areas around the world that I gained so much benefit in writing my own type of styles of compositions that has the same kind of structure and texture as this areas, hopefully one day I will compose a soundtrack that will have all the areas in it.online when I searching on different types of techniques that film composers uses i found out that they have same similarities in the results for example the midi sample videos that showed how to make strings sound realistic, all the different type of composers that made similar videos use techniques of modulation, automation, EQ and maybe reverb and in the end the all give out the same results even tough each one of them have used different elements. The theory books contained so much information about how to compose music, read music and learn different music techniques such as scales, chromatic chords, tonic chords, etc. They all contained exact same information except a few extra techniques in different books.
Each book has different types of teaching but they give out the same results such as the Dorothy Dingle taught me how to write and read few parts in the piano music sheet. It also taught me different type of scales that I found useful for my compositions, I have started composing harmonic minor and melodic minor scales it brings out a lot of different synchronisations for my melodies, it also brings a lot of texture taking me through different places that I have never imagined on hearing. The book gave me tips on how to compose melodies that have a harmonic cadence (in the middle) and a rhythmic cadence (at the end of the soundtrack.)it gave out new meaning to my compositions concluding my piece of music by using at least two chords.
The AB guide also taught me on how to write non-harmonic notes, passing notes and chromatic chords. To be completely honest I think the AB guide book gave out a lot more information about chords melodies than Dorathy Dingle.
I found out that AB guide is a great book to study as a composer, a songwriter or a instrumentalist but its a book without theory papers or practising question while the Dorathy Dingle gave out more examples and activities than the AB guide though I think the best book for a film composer is the revision guide because it gave out all the things other books would not have and that is different studies of music around the world giving out a great benefit for a composer like me.It also gave a lot practising questions beating the Dorathy Dingle book of the charts.
Studying Hans Zimmer-
I am studying one of my favourite composers hans Zimmer.Hans was born 12 of september in 1957.He is a German composer and a producer.Hans was born in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. As a child he had piano lessons only briefly because of his dislike of the discipline.Hans is inspired by different areas in each film soundtrack he is about to do for example what inspired Hans to write the soundtrack for the dark knight was on the way how pop music and electronic music use their synthesisers.Though most of the time I cannot hear where he got his inspiration from because of the way he uses his talent creating the soundtrack, it might have a glimpse of it but as a whole it is not noticeable.Hans started his career by scoring music for commercials in his early 20s, he also joined two British musicians to form a rock band called The Buggles. They made a world wide hit called "video killed the radio star" which was the first piece that was ever broadcast on America's network MTV.Its amazing how a present great composer was a major rock star in his 20s.
There are a bunch of interviews on how Hans creates his different film soundtracks but most of them are not specific enough to give out a whole view of Hans techniques though the one that I was very pleased to find was Hans Zimmer teaching a bit of music theory that he uses in some of his soundtracks.
The biggest talent that Hans has on all of his soundtracks is the use of dynamics and synthesisers. Both of this usage identifies Hans as a man of technology.
He uses orchestral and synthesisers together to make a greater impact on his soundtracks, it gives out texture and mood to the film.
Hans is a visionary artist, he has extraordinary sense in where the music is needed even though it has been said that the director and the composer usually have different views when they are discussing.Hans also pushes himself challenging the limits of the sounds though Hans doesn't have much of a technical skill in music a ok at piano and guitar, his usage of music knowledge is very limited but he is an amazing piano roll reader.
Musical background of film composers-
Most composers come from an essential musical background in childhood or by blood. Some composers have different types of musicians through their family, take a look of Hans Zimmer family he has a mother who was/is a musician and a father who was/is a engineer and inventor giving him the opportunity to learn the mechanics of his instruments and to learn how to play on the piano. Danny Elfman had a completely different musical background than Hans, he was born in a jewish family and his parents were teachers and writers, he was raised in mixed community in Los Angeles. He started a ska band after dropping out of high school. He traveled to France following his brother Richard performing with Le grand magic circus, he also traveled to Africa visiting different places and absorbing its musical styles he eventually returned home where he began Balinese music lessons.
John Powell is one of the amazing composers that has been educated as violinist as a child before studying at London's trinity music college. He adventured to jazz and rock music playing in the soul band "The Faboulistics" he later on composed music for commercials which led to as an assistant to the composer Patrick Doyle. As you can see this three composers may have a different backgrounds but they have the same similarities and that is the passion for music.Their backgrounds give out the talent and uniqueness though out their soundtracks.
Other unique composers-
I had a chance to look for other different composers and learn their ways on writing music and I found two composers that work together and call them selfs Two steps from hell. The 2 composers are Thomas Bergerson that creates the beauty and emotional side of their soundtracks and Nick Phoenix that creates the action and conflict. They both work together to make what I like to call an epic soundtrack, it means that as two composers that do not work in the film industry they do not have a specific genre, they distribute their songs by selling their albums online and in Youtube and sound cloud. Two steps from hell has a completely different style than any other composers, you can hear the elements used in different places around the world.Theres also a lot of rock and classical put together to make a more challenging melodies. They give out different elements that you can hear in film music that is the use of orchestra, strings and brass as well percussion.Theres also a lot of use of drums and synthesisers that can be related to the composer Hans.
Summary-
Its is amazing to have an opportunity to learn such a great amount about composing theory and different unique film composers that uses different techniques for their soundtracks.I learned that composing isn't such a difficult subject to learn, for a musician a good way become successful with their compositions is to write melodies, notes, chords every day to gain more experience and technique.I've learned that each composer has different musical backgrounds and those experiences that they have gained in their childhood gives out the influences in their soundtracks and makes the composer unique.
There are different formulas to help you learn on how to write music, each one of them gives out specific meanings and areas to a learning musician. Some of this formulas have the same information in a different format, for example the AB guide book gives out tons information written as a theory book with no practical elements while the Dorathy Dingle gives out a lot of practical work such as question papers and other ways to help you write but it does not give out a lot of different areas.
