The subject that i am investigating is film soundtracks mainly because i have a great passion towards this subject.Film soundtracks is written to follow specific pats of films, some may have been created to play throughout the whole film, others just specific parts a good example of soundtracks that are only played when action or drama is about to take place are horror soundtracks especially in the new movies they tend to have small parts with a few sequencing notes because the film producers wants to have the sound effects and dialogue as the main category throughout the whole film.I want to study more about film soundtracks so i can start composing songs that have different varieties of sequences, and dynamics. My aim is to start learning what this subject offers me and hopefully gain experience through other composers and musicians.
Composers that inspires me:
Hans zimmer-
Hans Zimmer is a composer and a producer born in 1957, he has composed music for over 200 films and his one of the top living genius (even stated in The Daily Telegraph) that uses a lot electronic synthesiser along with his orchestral pieces. Its been stated that Hans is not very good at reading music but his amazing at reading piano rolls and i think for an amazing composer not being able to read music so well, it what one of the things that he inspires me about becoming a composer. As a composer he can produce music so emotionally while just using chord structure, simple melodies and a big use of dynamics.Me as a musician i can not read music at all so i only use my ears to listen and compose what feels right and what is suitable for the key signature, the melody and the chords that I'm using. It gives me hope that if i work hard at composing music and always keep my mind and heart into it I can become a big success in the future just like Hans.
John Powell-
John Powell is a english composer born in 1963.I didn't recognise John's music before How to train your dragon came out ( Which was an amazing movie, especially the soundtrack) and to be honest I wish I would have recognised him sooner because his music is mind blowing.I love how he uses the orchestration into all of his soundtracks especially when he adds a touch of the different countries traditional music, for example in how to train your dragon you can hear the irish instruments played in the symphony such as the fiddle, bagpipes, dulcimer and etc.Another example is when Hans Zimmer and John Powell had decided to collaborate for this movie to make the soundtrack for Kung-Fu Panda the had worked together before in the movie The road to EL Dorado and Chill factor.Hans decided to visit China and learn about their culture and musical symphonies they both had translated the china culture into its franchise making the soundtrack a big part for the movie.
Danny Elfman-
Funny name but an amazing composer born in 1953 he is also a record producer, actor, voice actor, songwriter and a singer. He is known for scoring the majority Tim-Burton's movies, the Simpsons main theme and batman 1989 theme.Danny Elfman for me is a unique composer because of his crazy sequences that changes the mood of the theme a good example to give is the Simpsons theme if you hear closely you are able to listen that the theme goes through different moods by utilising the right instruments with the same sequence and melody in different pitches. To me he has a great influence because of the unique to use different melodies into a short theme or song.
Two steps from hell-
When I started listening and discovering my passion towards themes and soundtracks was when i discovered two steps from hell. Two composers working together to create a the most epic soundtracks. Two steps from hell changed my music viewpoint dramatically, i finally had realised that there was something greater than songwriting, something that has no lead voice or no lyrical language and brought so much emotion into a 1-3 minute songs. I never once liked classical music and i still don't but i love film soundtrack or epic soundtracks maybe its because of the way its created with a hint of different genres put together anyway two steps from hell changed music completely at least to me, both composers inspire me to learn to compose music the way they do.The companies music has been used for video games,tv shows and films but they usually do their own music independently even though it has been used for sports events, royal concerts, etc.I also have a great passion for two steps from hell because their music was the main reason i started playing piano, i wanted to perform with the same kind of emotion that i felt when i was listening to their songs.
